The Week May 22-28, 2017

Last week’s goals with progress indicated:

    • Finish (sans blocking), wear, and photograph Aspen. Update Ravelry project notes.
Done. But I’m still working on it; I didn’t pick up enough stitches for the button bands & collar so it pulled (you can see it in the bottom hem in the picture) and it wasn’t going to block out. So I ripped the whole thing out and picked up 1 st per row of knitting instead of 3 st for every 4 rows. I’m on the second set of short rows (after the buttonholes) and might finish today, if not then tomorrow for sure.

Owl Creek, Aspen

  • Look at and maybe choose patterns for a summer top to get started on.
Nope. I was too busy being unhappy with the collar on Aspen.
  • Work on Aranami (knit at least 1 new wedge) OR spin more.
I finished a row of wedges and started the next row! I have 2 rows left and then a different final row that gets bound off all at once (instead off binding off individual wedges). I’m going to have yarn left over, too. Maybe I’ll make some socks with it – it is sock yarn after all.
  • Go to TKD once or walk on the treadmill.
Nope. I know I need to do these, I just am not.
  • Ethan’s graduation party planning: order food from Wegmans, pig from that place in Alexandria or Arlington or wherever the pig place is.
  • Make college physical appointment for Ethan for the 1st week in June.
  • Start cleaning for Melanie’s visit Memorial Day Weekend.

This week:

  • Finish (sans blocking), wear, and photograph Aspen again. Update Ravelry project notes again.
  • Look at and maybe choose patterns for a summer top to get started on.
  • Work on Aranami (knit at least 1 new wedge) OR spin more.
  • Go to TKD once or walk on the treadmill.
  • Ethan’s graduation party planning: remind Ky to order the pig.
  • Super clean kitchen, vacuum Thursday, clean bathrooms Friday for Melanie’s visit.

I also visited the kittens again on Saturday. I have a favorite, or at least a type; I’m not sure if the same black kitten fell asleep on me this week, but a black kitten definitely fell asleep on me and I really, really would love to have one of them. Pucka, the girl, is a little odd and standoffish with the others, but she’s also a bit of a battle cat. Selkie, the boy, still suckles his mama (Irelyn) even though the kittens are fully weaned at this point. But he’s also an adventurer and a bit of a battle cat (not afraid to play). Either one of them would fit in well with Jeff & Eevee and the dog crew.

Selkie
Awake!
Selkie
Getting sleeeeepy …
Selkie
Asleep! All in a few seconds.
Selkie
Totally zonked out Selkie. I repositioned his head so it didn’t look uncomfortably crooked.

The Week May 15-21, 2017

Last week’s goals with progress indicated:

  • Continue up Aspen‘s back.
The back is finished. The collar is finished. I’m in the middle of seaming – I have to set in the 2nd sleeve, sew the side seams, and sew the buttons on. If I can get it done today I’ll be able to wear it tonight before the weather heats up tomorrow for the rest of the week.
  • Work on Aranami (knit at least 1 new wedge) OR spin more (crucial since I got more fiber at MDS&W but still have all the fiber from last year).
I finished 2 more wedges of Aranami – it’s my Wednesday meet-up project.
  • Embroider more.
    Nope.
  • Go to TKD once.
Nope! I don’t want to get ahead of the friend I’m doing TKD with and she’s having surgery this week, so I walked twice on the treadmill to get up and moving.
  • Write post about MDS&W to replace one of my regular days.
Not exactly – I didn’t have to write anything because I chose Wordless Wednesday as the easy post to replace.
  • Start planning Ethan’s graduation party before it’s June and I haven’t done anything.
    Guest list set, evites sent.

This week:

  • Finish (sans blocking), wear, and photograph Aspen. Update Ravelry project notes.
  • Look at and maybe choose patterns for a summer top to get started on.
  • Work on Aranami (knit at least 1 new wedge) OR spin more.
  • Go to TKD once or walk on the treadmill.

I’ve been trying to keep this list fiber-related, but I’ve started to slip a little with using my bullet journal to track everything else (as in: I’m not really using it for planning at this point). In that spirit:

  • Ethan’s graduation party planning: order food from Wegmans, pig from that place in Alexandria or Arlington or wherever the pig place is.
  • Make college physical appointment for Ethan for the 1st week in June.
  • Start cleaning for Melanie’s visit Memorial Day Weekend.

I’ll leave you with a picture of the sweetest kitten ever. I have friends that are kitty fosters for a few different local rescues. They currently have a mama (Irelyn) and her 6 week old babies. The gave the kittens Celtic names in keeping with Mama’s (misspelled) name, so this is Pucka, who fell asleep in my arms during my second visit. I’m smitten with this kitten.

Kitten time again and we tuckered poor Pucka so much that she zonked out in my arms. I'm never leaving The Cat-House! #cats #catsofig #catsofinstagram #cats_of_instagram #catsoftheworld #kittens #kittensofinstagram #kitten #blackcat #puckaCat

The Week May 8-14, 2017

Last week’s goals with progress indicated:

  • Continue up Aspen‘s back.
I reached the armhole shaping, now done, and am just working my way up the full length of the armscythe. The weather has been cooler, so if I motor on and finish it there’s a chance I’ll be able to wear it.
  • Work on Aranami (knit at least 1 new wedge) OR spin more.
I worked on Aranami again, another wedge and a half.
  • Embroider more.
Nope. But I did clear out a project basket to keep everything in since it spread to take over the coffee table.
  • Write 2 more poems.
I wrote one more, not two. Close enough.
  • Go to TKD at least once.
Nope, I didn’t go – I found excuses Monday – Wednesday (the only realistic days I could go).
  • Eat cake on Wednesday (my birthday).
Done! I ordered a two layer chocolate cake with buttercream frosting from my local Wegmans. It lasted until Thursday night.
  • Bring my oldest home from college Friday.
Done. I have enough Liz Phair music (yes, I’ve been listening to her for over 20 years now & buying her new albums as they come out) to keep me entertained for a day of driving.
  • Maybe go to the Immigrants March with the family on Saturday. (My husband and his family were Vietnamese refugees who came here in the early 80s and I think it’s important for us to be there, though he is less enthusiastic.)
Nope. And I haven’t heard (or sought out, TBH) any info about it.
  • Go to Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival on Sunday with my friend Becky & her daughter. Are you local(ish) and going? Want to meet up? I’m thinking an early lunch would be an ideal time – I’m already planning on meeting an IG friend, but the more the merrier!
I went, I saw, I felt all the yarn and fiber. It was great – I’m going to write a post about it sometime this week.

This week:

  • Continue up Aspen‘s back.
  • Work on Aranami (knit at least 1 new wedge) OR spin more (crucial since I got more fiber at MDS&W but still have all the fiber from last year).
  • Embroider more.
  • Go to TKD once.
  • Write post about MDS&W to replace one of my regular days.
  • Start planning Ethan’s graduation party before it’s June and I haven’t done anything.

I’ll leave you with an aerial view of the flowers my husband sent me for my birthday last Wednesday. He wanted to get me something that would last longer than cut flowers, so he got this mixed planting with an orchid and 5 other plants. It’s gorgeous and, more importantly, still alive.

Aerial view of birthday flowers from my husband. It's hard to capture all the colors & textures, but he chose well! #orchids #birthdayflowers #birthdayplants//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js

The Week May 1-7, 2017

Last week’s goals with progress indicated:

  • Work my way up Aspen‘s back.
Working working. I’m nearly to the armhole shaping.
  • Work on Aranami (knit at least 1 new wedge) OR spin more.
I knit 2 more wedges. This has become my portable, easy-to-work-on project.
  • Go to TKD twice; gotta break in that orange belt a little more.
I only went once again. Not that I’m making excuses, but my buddy is out of commission for a few weeks, which gives me less motivation to go.
  • Finish out NaPoWriMo, which technically ends on the 30th but I may carry on into May to make up starting on the 3rd.
Still on the NaPoWriMo train. As far as I know, I’m going to keep going so I have 30 poems out of it instead of 28.

I also began an embroidery project. I’ve been looking longingly at embroidery for a while now and decided to get a kit.

Today's crafting adventure: embroidery. Thanks for a great kit @sublimestitching! #embroidery #embroiderykit #sublimestitching #foxy

A few years ago I fooled around with embroidery (technically crewelwork, I guess) and beading using handmade felt and handspun yarn, which you can see here along with some other one-off projects. It was fun and I’d like to get better at it.

This week:

  • Continue up Aspen‘s back.
  • Work on Aranami (knit at least 1 new wedge) OR spin more.
  • Embroider more.
  • Write 2 more poems.
  • Go to TKD at least once.
  • Eat cake on Wednesday (my birthday).
  • Bring my oldest home from college Friday.
  • Maybe go to the Immigrants March with the family on Saturday. (My husband and his family were Vietnamese refugees who came here in the early 80s and I think it’s important for us to be there, though he is less enthusiastic.)
  • Go to Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival on Sunday with my friend Becky & her daughter. Are you local(ish) and going? Want to meet up? I’m thinking an early lunch would be an ideal time – I’m already planning on meeting an IG friend, but the more the merrier!

The Week April 24-30, 2017

Last week’s goals with progress indicated:

  • Start Aspen‘s back.
I finished the ribbing and am almost to the first side decrease in the cables.
  • Weave in some of the ends on Aranami & knit at least 1 new wedge OR spin more.
I took Aranami with me to knitting on Wednesday and to the Science March on Saturday, where it rained more than I thought it would. I wove in all the ends I could and knit almost 2 wedges.
  • Go to TKD twice.
    I went once.
  • Go to Science March in DC on Saturday. I have my official tshirt, I just need to seek out details, like the start & end points. Need to decide on a sign or no sign.
Went! Well, to the rally at least. It was rainy and I lost feeling in some of my fingers, so we packed it in after 3 hours, after Bill Nye spoke.
  • Carry on with the poetry every day. Thanks to everyone who’s read and liked the posts – poetry isn’t for everyone, and then some people (me!) are very picky about what they like, so I really appreciate the reading/likes.

This week:

  • Work my way up Aspen‘s back.
  • Work on Aranami (knit at least 1 new wedge) OR spin more.
  • Go to TKD twice; gotta break in that orange belt a little more.
  • Finish out NaPoWriMo, which technically ends on the 30th but I may carry on into May to make up starting on the 3rd.

I leave you with Bill Nye and evidence of our super awesome spot right in front of the stage! Apologies for the portrait mode video; I always forget to turn my phone for better landscape video. An old person problem, perhaps.

The Week April 17-23, 2017

Last week’s goals with progress indicated:

  • Continue the fronts for Aspen.
Done. No, really: the fronts are done. I finished them last night and haven’t even taken a picture. (Sorry.)
  • Weave in some of the ends on Aranami & knit at least 1 new wedge.
Nope. I didn’t pick up this shawl up at all.
  • Go to TKD belt ceremony on Saturday.
Done. I’m rocking an orange belt now.
  • Replace the etsy shop link in @madgeface twitter account with link to this.
    Done.
  • Write or work on a poem a day, continuing with separate posts. Thanks to everyone who’s read a poem or two!
Done, even for Easter. It’s going much better than it did in 2014.

I also started spinning a batt that I got last spring in a swap. I’m sort of spinning from the fold instead of my usual, or spinning side to side rather than top to bottom, if that makes sense. I should do some reading so I can use the proper terms again for what I’m doing but it’s been so long a little Alden Amos will be helpful.

Next week:

  • Start Aspen‘s back.
  • Weave in some of the ends on Aranami & knit at least 1 new wedge OR spin more.
  • Go to TKD twice.
  • Go to Science March in DC on Saturday. I have my official tshirt, I just need to seek out details, like the start & end points. Need to decide on a sign or no sign.
  • Carry on with the poetry every day. Thanks to everyone who’s read and liked the posts – poetry isn’t for everyone, and then some people (me!) are very picky about what they like, so I really appreciate the reading/likes.
Spinning progress. This part of the batt more closely matches my leader yarn (bottom part of the bobbin in the picture), so it’s more of a burgundy and brown than a gray black, but I’m having a moment adjusting the colors, so here it is.

The Week April 10-16, 2017

Last week’s goals with progress indicated:

      • Knit 1 or more wedge of Aranami.
Done. I knit 2 wedges and ended a row & color.
      • Cast on the fronts of Aspen.
Done. I finished the ribbing and started the cabling. It’s going swimmingly!

I started the fronts for my Aspen cardi - hurray! . . . . #knitting #handknit #stickning #strikke #strikking #knittersofinstagram #tricot #knittersgonnaknit #knittinglove #tejar #knittingaddict #knitting_inspiration #knittinglove #knittersofravelry #yar

    • Go to TKD twice – once for practice, once for testing.
Done. Practice was fine, and while I passed both belt tests (yellow & orange), I’m  not happy with how it went. I wasn’t prepared (by instructors) for part of the test, I should have practiced a few things more on my own (counting & basic movements), and nerves. Next time will be better.
    • Learn to count in Korean from 11-30 (I already know 1-10).
Done but I need to practice all that I can so that I associate the words with a number rather than having the sequence memorized.
    • Add more pictures to Society 6 and let my FB people know.
Done. There was a sale, too, so that gave me another reason to post.
    • Replace the blog link in Instagram with a link to Socitey 6. And since I’m on the subject, replace etsy shop link in @madgeface twitter account with link to this.
I changed my mind about the Instagram link; I’m leaving it. But I do need to update twitter, still.
    • Write or work on a poem a day. I’m going to be doing separate posts for this; my apologies if poetry isn’t your thing. I have no expectation that anyone will read the poems but rather am posting for personal accountability.
      Done.

This week:

  • Continue the fronts for Aspen.
  • Weave in some of the ends on Aranami & knit at least 1 new wedge.
  • Go to TKD belt ceremony on Saturday.
  • Replace the etsy shop link in @madgeface twitter account with link to this.
  • Write or work on a poem a day, continuing with separate posts. Thanks to everyone who’s read a poem or two!
  • Enjoy the beautiful spring weather.
    Already done. 🙂
